How Do Thermal Imaging Cameras Function?
Infrared, IR, or thermal imaging cameras detect and measure infrared radiation emanating from objects, thus determining their heat signature. In order to do so it is necessary for the camera to be fitted with a lens that allows IR frequencies to pass through before focusing them on to a special sensor array, which will be able to detect and read the IR signals. Each of the sensors array's pixels reacts to infrared wavelengths and transforms these into electrical signals. Signals are then transmitted back to the camera's processor, which uses algorithms to transform the signals into a colormap with different temperature values. It's this map which is then displayed on the screen. Why Is Thermal Imaging More Effectively At Night Rather Than Day?
The temperature of the surrounding environment is dark and light which makes thermal imaging cameras more effective during the night. Rather, because the temperature of the surrounding environment - and in particular, the core temperature of unheated areas and objects - is nearly always significantly lower at night than during sunlight hours, thermal imaging sensors are able to display warmer regions with higher contrast. Even on relatively cool days in the summer, the heat generated by the sun's rays will gradually be absorption by roads, buildings plants, trees, construction materials and much more, even when it's daylight outside. In the same way, most thermal imaging cameras will display warm objects in sharper contrast following several hours of darkness, instead of just after the sun goes down even during the full daylight hours typically, they'll be more effective in the morning rather than the middle of the afternoon. It's certainly not impossible. Some infrared frequencies can traverse through glass. However, certain designs and types may permit different degrees of infrared be able to pass through.
